Building Healthy Relationships

Updated: Jun 5, 2023

Building healthy relationships can be challenging, but it is a vital part of our social lives. Here are some tips that can help you build and maintain healthy relationships:

1. Communication: Communication is the key to any healthy relationship. You need to be able to express your feelings, thoughts, and opinions in a clear and respectful way. Make sure you listen actively to the other person and try to understand their point of view.

ADDED TIP: Healthy arguments do exist.

Healthy arguments come from a place of empathy, compassion, and understanding toward your partner. Healthy arguments do exist and can be accomplished by remaining calm and respectful while expressing your feelings.

2. Trust: Trust is an essential component of any healthy relationship. You need to be able to rely on the other person and feel safe in their presence. This means being honest, reliable, and consistent in your actions.

ADDED TIP: Post Trauma Triggers can occur from past relationships

It is important to acknowledge, understand, and heal from the previous relationship trauma so that we do not carry those burdens into our next relationship. Your current/next partner should not have to suffer the consequences of your previous partner. Recognizes your triggers, and learn how to communicate those triggers in a healthy manner.

3. Respect: Respect is critical in any relationship. You need to respect the other person's boundaries, beliefs, and opinions. This means not belittling or dismissing their feelings, and treating them with kindness and consideration.

ADDED TIP: Words cannot be taken back once said

No matter how heated or angry an argument can get, emotional control is one of your biggest assets, especially with someone you love and care about

4. Compromise: In any relationship, there are bound to be conflicts and disagreements. It's important to be able to compromise and find a solution that works for both parties. This means being open-minded, flexible, and willing to find common ground.

5. Empathy: Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It's important to be empathetic in any relationship and try to see things from the other person's point of view. This means being supportive, compassionate, and willing to help them through difficult times.

Remember, building healthy relationships takes time and effort. It's important to be patient, understanding, and committed to making the relationship work.
